Tennessee is an “at-will” employment state meaning that unless an employee has a written contract of employment that contains a specific term of employment and compensation, an employee may be fired for no reason. However, there are a number of exceptions to the general rule of “at-will” employment including state and federal discrimination laws and state and federal whistleblower laws. The Tennessee General Assembly recently passed a law that nullified court made law that prohibited termination of employment for reasons which violate public policy.
